Bayer Canada builds partnership with Egale Canada to support LGBTQI2S youth
Bayer Canada recently launched their partnership with Egale Canada; to support their work in improving the lives of LGBTQI2S people in Canada and to enhance the global response to LGBTQI2S issues.
The BLEND network is a global community for Bayer’s LGBT+ employees and their allies. BLEND contributes to a better life for LGBT+ and ally employees as a strategic partner for Bayer. Most recently, BLEND took the opportunity to provide an afternoon full of conversation, feasting, contributions and most importantly, connecting with young LGBT+ people to further understand how Bayer can best support them.
Egale Youth Services, located in downtown Toronto, is a place where LGBTQI2S children and youth up to age 29 are provided affirming, supportive, appropriate mental health care, counselling, housing solutions as well as a drop-in space available for youth to gather. Egale Youth Services provides meals, Toronto Transit commission (TTC) fares and many other basic necessities.
“We believe that through this partnership, Bayer is uniquely positioned to not only create an inclusive and safe environment for everyone in the workplace but also to bring about a cultural shift and promote LGBTQI2S inclusion in the broader community. We are convinced that together we can achieve a Canada without homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and all other forms of oppression so that every individual can achieve their full potential, free from hatred and bias.” Helen Kennedy, Egale Canada Executive Director
In early August, BLEND initiated a matching funds campaign to support Egale’s ongoing community work. Donations were collected throughout the month of August with Bayer matching employee donations.
Egale Canada expressed their need for improved technology in the youth centre. As a result, Bayer donated additional technology resources for the centre.
On August 22, BLEND organized an August Harvest at the Egale Youth Services Centre to represent the recent partnership between Bayer and Egale Canada.
BLEND team members, volunteers and allies were present for the afternoon spent at Egale. While lunch, dinner and refreshments were served, Bayer brought much more to present during the feast. A life-size donation cheque was presented with $8,000 to the Egale Canada Human Rights Trust. Shortly after the excitement was tamed, Bayer brought the energy back by presenting 25 iPads to the Centre that will be utilized at their new shelter and current centres.
The BLEND Team shared great conversations with the youth at the August Harvest and gained a better understanding of how Bayer can provide beneficial resources in the near future. BLEND and Egale are working closely to plan future volunteer opportunities for Bayer employees.
